The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has earmarked Dh 500 million for its humanitarian projects next year, according to a top official at the charity agency. In a get together meeting with media on Monday night, RCS Chairman Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi said the agency had disbursed over Dh 100 million in aid this year.

He added that RCS' assistance reached out to the needy in more than 50 countries. "This year, we distributed over Dh 21 million worth of aid among more than 6,000 families at the local level in addition to Dh 4.5 million in Iftar meals and Zakat al-Fitr (end of Ramadan alms)," he stated, adding that around Dh 57 million has been budgeted for local aid.

Al Suweidi pointed out that more than US$12.7 million in humanitarian projects had been spent in most countries of the world, particularly in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan. He said RCS has collected more Dh 71 million this year from fund-raising campaigns.

He cited the US$100 million donated by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to quake victims in Pakistan as an example of aid offered by UAE to disaster-hit countries. According to him, the RCS has allocated Dh 4 million for quake victims. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
