The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) implemented several projects worth Dh16 million in Gaza strip last year, official RCS sources said. In a comprehensive report on its humanitarian activities in Palestine, the RCS said that the projects covered the areas of relief, construction and reconstruction of demolished houses. The report noted that thousands of Palestinian families have been left homeless, following the destruction of their houses and farms.

The UAE was prompted by a genuine brotherly desire to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. Thus, the projects that were implemented on the orders of H.H President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, were mainly of humanitarian nature aimed at providing a glimmer of hope for the distressed civilian populations+ said the report which was compiled by the UAE Friends Society in Gaza, a civic body that is coordinating RCS activities in Gaza.

The RCS, acting on the instructions of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the RCS, allocated a total of six million dirhams during 2003 for construction projects as many families were in dire need of shelter. Substantial funds were also allocated for the support of infrastructure projects, which are virtually non-existent in Palestine.

Among projects implemented in this area are the establishment of a maternity unit in Al Razi hospital in addition to refurbishment of Al Rafah charity hospital in South Gaza and Al Nada Health Centre in Northern Gaza. Disabled rehabilitation centres were also set up as part of the charity and humanitarian projects implemented during 2003. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
