Colombo - The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Labour signed yesterday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for building the UAE district in the north eastern city of Trincomalee.

The MoU was signed at the UAE Embassy in the presence of Athauda Senevirathne, Minister of Labor Relations and Foreign Employment, UAE Ambassador Mahmoud Mohammed Al Mahmoud and a number of top RCS officials.

Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Head of the RCS delegation, said the project would be financed by the Zayed Foundation for Charitable and Humanitarian Works for the interest of the victims of tsunami tidal waves.

'The project has crowned the existing fruitful partnership between the RCS and the Zayed Foundation in the service of the needy population hit by the tsunami disaster,' he said. According to the project designs, he said 20 residential units will be built in six months at a total cost of Dh 367,000.

The Sri Lankan minister appreciated the UAE for its generous humanitarian support for the tsunami-affected population. He expressed his country's profound thanks for the RCS for its care to Sri Lankan people under the instructions of UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to relieve Sri Lankan people.

He noted that the humanitarian assistance extended by the UAE had been met with high appreciation at both public and popular levels. He added that RCS humanitarian and development projects give a spiritual and moral boost to the affected people. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
