The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has extended a total of Dh340 million in relief materials to victims of disasters and conflicts around the world. In a foreword to the RCS 2003 annual report, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, paid tributes to H.H. President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his support for victims and the needy throughout the world. "The globe has experienced bitter conflicts, bloody events and devastating catastrophes in a number of regions," said Sheikh Hamdan, who is also RCS Chairman.

He said the UAE has persistently rendered support and assistance to the victims at flaming spots in the world. The report highlights humanitarian programmes and activities worth over Dh 42 million carried out by the RCS inside the UAE in 2003. The RCS has executed 45 structural projects in the country at the cost of Dh 681,000 in the report's year. Seasonal schemes implemented last year were valued at more than Dh 6 million.

The Charity organisation has expended a total of Dh 1.3 million to provide meals to 96,000 persons during the fasting month of Ramadan. The RCS foreign sector's programmes in 2003 were valued at over Dh 298 million, the major share of which (Dh 143.8 million) was earmarked to the Iraq relief programme. A total of 30 countries around the globe received RCS assistance last year. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
