The UAE Red Crescent Society said yesterday that it was preparing for a massive relief operation in Iraq, following a request from the Iraqi Red Crescent Society. The charity organisation said it was now preparing large quantities of humanitarian items, including medical and relief supplies, to be delivered to the needy in Iraq, said Sanaa Darwish Al Qitbi, Secretary General of (RCS). Al Qitbi added that a RCS delegation which is already in Baghdad has purchased some of these items from the local markets. Relief flights will be organised soon to Iraq and other neighbouring countries which are expected to witness influx of Iraqi civilians fleeing the current war. The RCS is also coordinating with humanitarian bodies in Jordan and Syria to provide a strategic reserve to alleviate the suffering of the Iraqi people. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
