The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) is embarking on programmes catering to people with special needs, in order to promote their social, academic and professional participation in the society. "Under the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and President of the RCS, the society has given special attention to the disabled, so as to forge ties between the society and this category in the best interest of disabled," said Khalifa Nasser Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the RCS, according to a report in "Khaleej Times.”

The RCS, in co-ordination with the Ministry of Education and Youth and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, is working to implement a number of projects to enable disabled people to contribute in the social activities, so that they can regain trust in themselves as an effective element in the process of nation building, said Al Suwaidi.

The Society has established a special printing press using Braille system at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation, to provide blind students with the academic curricula, he said. During the past two years, the printing press has been able to publish 1,000 books on different subjects for students at primary, elementary and senior levels, added Al Suwaidi. He pointed out that the printing press also has a plan of printing the Holy Quran and other academic books for sightless people. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
