Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society, said the UAE RCS was ready to meet any new humanitarian situation that may arise in Iraq. He said that the RCS was playing a leading role in assisting victims of the current developments in Iraq and would garner support to tackle the deteriorating situation of the Iraqi people, caused by more than 12 years of sanctions, adding that the organisation views with great concern the humanitarian situation the Iraqi people would be facing if the situation there continue to deteriorate.

He pointed out that the RCS was now working to effect a mechanism in the area of relief supplies and emergency cases as well as in the area of gathering volunteers to implement its humanitarian works in Iraq. Sheikh Hamdan said that the RCS would use all its resources to face the situation in Iraq and live up to its responsibilities towards the Iraqi people.

He added that the RCS was continuing its humanitarian programme in various Iraqi towns. This, he said, was in addition to supplying foodstuff to the strategic storage of the Iraqi RCS and the UNICEF offices in Iraq, he added. The minister said that the organisation was strengthening its efforts to boost cooperation and coordination with other regional and international humanitarian organisations working in Iraq. This has led to signing of several agreements with a number of organisations working in that country, he said. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
