A huge chunk of relief assistance is being offered to Jenin in the West Bank by the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) as part of its humanitarian programme to ease the suffering of Palestinians who are still under the yoke of the heavy-handed Israeli occupation. The assistance, which borders Dh 100 million, is channelled to help a wide spectrum of deprived families, orphans, unemployed labourers, the disabled and those with special needs. In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Fawaz Hamad, Director of Al Razi Hospital, said that The UAE and the RCS are in the forefront of other Arab countries and organisations in their unique humanitarian endeavour to extend help to Jenin, before and during the continuing Israeli incursions.

He said that the RCS' prompt presence in crisis areas to redress the peoples' requirement is highly commendable. He said that equipment that were never known to Jenin before, like a Dh. 300,000 equipment for jaw-surgery was offered by RCS which had saved Intifada victims from death or paralysis. Hamad said that the RCS had provided Jenin Hospital with modern medical equipment and medicines besides considerable funds to support upgrading the quality of services and to sustain the immense costs of the administrative and medical cadres.

Sheikh Zaid Zakarna, Chairman of the hospitals' Board of Directors, said that the poor sectors in Jenin were getting free medical treatment or were paying minimal fees, thanks to the RCS. The RCS assistance to Jenin comprises generous and monumental seasonal aid programmes in various Islamic religious occasions and school uniform for children, just to name a few. Zakarna said that the Jenin Zakat (alms) Committee is currently constructing an orphanage that will shelter over 800 orphans who will be provided with free education, medication and rations. He added that a school that will accommodate over 1000 students is also under construction. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
