Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has voiced deep concern over the tragic humanitarian situation of the drought and desertification hit- population in a number of African countries.

'The tragedy of those affected poor people is worsening day by day due to shortage of food and scarcity of water -an indication of a real catastrophe threatening millions of lives,' She Hamdan said, affirming that these abject circumstances require coordinated regional and international humanitarian efforts to ease the suffering of the those population and improve their living conditions.

He added that the RCS had early realised the magnitude of the catastrophe through its continuous contacts and awareness of the humanitarian situation in Africa and through its assistance it extended there.

'The RCS has not been in any of the days away from the scene of events in Africa. It has launched its humanitarian and charity operations since 1980s and it is still working energetically to relieve them and improve their living conditions,' he said. Citing the RCS campaign to fight hunger on the Horn of Africa, he affirmed that the RCS would spare no efforts to deliver its humanitarian message towards the African needy people. He appealed to all philanthropists and community forces to give hand to the RCS in its campaign. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
