RCS team delivers aid to victims of Mount Merpai eruption

The UAE Red Crescent Society has distributed urgent relief and medical supplies to locals affected by streams of lava spewed by Mount Merapi which erupted early Thursday. Residents were evacuated as red-hot lava began flowing from the crater of Indonesia's rumbling volcano Mount.

Medical examinations conducted by RCS team showed that local residents who survived the eruption were suffering from bronchitis and other respiratory diseases as a direct result of poisonous gases spewing from the lava.

"The RCS team was at the vicinity of Mount Merapi, hours before it erupted. The team was there in response to pleas of local residents who had been warned that an eruption of mount was imminent. But as soon as we left the area burning streams of molten lava started pouring down the slopes. Merapi is one of at least 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire" - a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.

According to Dr. Al Tae, about 75 per cent of death cases were related to lava gases. About 200 houses were destroyed by lava which continues to threaten lives of hundreds of people in the area. About 600 people have received medication, 40 of whom have been admitted to an RCS field hospital. The RCS will continue to do everything within its power to provide more aid to the victims, said Al Tae. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
