A visiting UAE Red Crescent Society team met on Sunday Afghani Housing Minister Mohammed Bashtoun to discuss arrangements for laying down the foundation stone for the Dh 16 million Sheikh Zayed city here. Abdullah Al Mahmoud, Director of Projects and Development and head of the team, said he had briefed the minister on humanitarian projects being carried out by the RCS.

'The first phase of the city will see the construction of 200 housing units, a mosque, hospital and school,' he added. The project, he said, would help to ease the problem of housing in the country.

The Afghani minister thanked the UAE for the generous assistance it extended to his people. He said the Sheikh Zayed city would give shelter to thousands of homeless families in Kabul. He indicated that his country was in need for more assistance for reconstruction. 'We welcome investors from the UAE in the housing sector which along with the infrastructure projects urgently need US$5 billion,' he said.

Around 30 per cent of families have no homes. Meanwhile, a ceremony was held today for laying the foundation stone for the Sheikh Zayed mosque and school in Barwan (60 km away from Kabul). A contract for the project was signed with a local construction company. Al Mahmoud said the project will cost Dh 1.2 million and be completed in six months. The mosque will be built on an area of 9,000 sq m and accommodate over 2000 worshippers while the school will have 18 classes for 300 students. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
