In line with the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS), a delegation from the Emirates Friends Society visited yesterday the Dome of the Rock mosque (Qubat Al Sakhra), which is to undergo repair works, the cost of which will be paid by H.H President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The delegation viewed the cracks which occurred in the historic mosque as a result of the earth tremor, which hit Jerusalem recently. Yousef Makkawi, Director of the Emirates Friends Society, a civic body that represents the RCS said the delegation met with engineers in charge of the maintenance works. They hailed the initiative of President Sheikh Zayed to preserve one of the Muslims' holiest sites.

They pointed out that the engineering team had prepared a complete report about the stages of the maintenance works Khalifa Nasir Al Suweidi, RCS Board Chairman, said that the RCS is in close contacts with those in charge of the maintenance work in Al Aqsa mosques and other holy sites in Jerusalem to ensure that work is begun immediately. He added that a report received by the RCS showed that the dome was in dire need of repairs from the several cracks it suffered from the recent earth tremor in addition to other factors such as humidity.
