RCS to distribute aid in Somalia

The UAE Red Crescent (RCS) will carry out an urgent relief programme in Somalia, according to Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi, RCS Chairman. Al Suweidi made the pledge during here meeting here on Saturday with Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, President of Puntland state of Somalia. They discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation faced by wide spectrum of people there. Ahmed briefed the RCS officials on the state of affairs in Puntland, describing the conditions there as "tragic." He hailed the UAE for its support for the Somali people. On the other hand, the RCS has started distributing Zakat al-Fitr (end of Ramadan alms) among needy families and individuals. Quantities of foodstuff and in kind materials were distributed today in front of the RCS headquarters in Abu Dhabi. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
