A UAE ship loaded with relief will set sail for the Horn of Africa in the coming few days as part of a campaign to aid drought-hit populations in Kenya, Tanzania and Djibouti. Secretary General of the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) Sana Al Kitbi said the ship would carry 500 tonnes of various relief supplies from food to blankets and tents.

'The RCS is closely monitoring the famine and drought and famine situation in the Horn of Africa and is striving through its humanitarian programmes to assist peoples there and spare them a humanitarian disaster,' she said.

'We are planning relief programmes based on field surveys of the reality on the ground in the Horn of Africa countries which were the most hit by desertification,' she added.

She explained that the RCS in coordination with its representative offices and its counterparts in these countries were carrying out relief campaigns to meet requirements of affected peoples.

'The real situation on the ground threatens lives of millions of populations in Africa which faces daunting challenges to fend off the aftermath of drought and desertification ......the magnitude of the tragedy goes beyond the resources of these countries,' she noted. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
