Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affaires and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS), instructed the society to rush urgent humanitarian assistance to the earthquake-hit population in north Afghanistan. RCS Secretary General Sana Darwish announced that two aid planes carrying food supplies would fly to Mazar-e-Sharif as of Friday, while blankets would be bought from Afghan and neighbouring Asian markets. She said that a RCS team will escort the first plane scheduled to leave on Friday. ' RCS teams will frequently tour affected areas to inspect conditions and assess their needs,' she added. The earthquake has left tens thousands of Afghans homeless. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
