RCS to set up a rehabilitation centre in Gaza

The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has allocated four million dirhams for the establishment of a centre for rehabilitation of people with special needs in Gaza. The new project is the latest phase of a sustained effort by the humanitarian body to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, said Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi, RCS Chairman of the Board of Directors. It is also part of the efforts to assist in building basic infrastructure for people with special needs, he added.

The project is the fourth of its kind to be implemented in Palestine. Earlier projects included the Sheikha Fatima centre for rehabilitating people with special needs in Hebron, Sheikha Fatima centre for paralysis patients in Gaza and the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed for the disabled in Nablus.

Al Suwidi stressed the needs for such centres as the number of people with permanent disabilities continues to increase. "It is estimated that about 30% of the Palestinian people have received permanent disabilities since the Intifada” he said. He pointed out the year 2003 RCS programme includes several projects aimed at supporting the Palestinian people. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
