The Ras al-Khaimah government and the Swiss Centre for Electronics and Micro-technology (CSEM), yesterday ratified a join venture agreement to establish a CSEM-UAE Innovation Centre. The RAK-based research is to advance innovation and incubation of technologies and process improvement for industrial and entrepreneurial partners in the UAE and the region. It will usher in a new area of technological and scientific research advancement in the UAE.

The centre will provide state-of-the-art applied research facilities in the fields of microelectronics, systems engineering, and information and communication technologies, Thomas Hinderling, Chief Executive Officer of CSEM told reporters at a Press conference organised yesterday at the premises of RAC Ceramic Company.

The CSEM is a prestigious research centre. Its headquarter is in Neuchatel and it has two centres — one in Zurich and the other in Alpanch. It also operates in many European countries besides Japan and the US.

By offering its high-tech know-how, competence and expertise, the centre will anticipate and fulfil the needs of the industrial partners in the region, he added. The facility will provide customised microsystems, microelectronic designs and system solutions as well as services for high-tech coatings and new materials.

The government of RAK contributes around US$3 million out of the project's total cost, which amount to US$5 million, he added. "The centre will foster a close and strong relationship with the different institutions of high education to exchange expertise and training for the local cadres," he maintained.
