UAE's Red Crescent Society, RCS, today said that a plane carrying food and other supplies would leave for Niger today. In a statement to the press, Sana'a Darwish, the Society's Secretary General, said that Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Society, had ordered the supplies to be sent to Niger to be distributed to victims of the drought that hit parts of the African country. She said that the Society's assistance programme of the new year includes sending relief supplies to a number of African countries suffering from severe food shortages due to droughts and mass migrations. She added that the assistance the Society had extended to Niger in the previous year totalled Dh1 million and included medical equipment, foodstuff and cash. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
