Red Crescent spends Dh250 million in 2006

The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) carried out humanitarian and relief operations outside the country costing a total of Dh 250 million in 2006, according to a report published in the RCA magazine. These projects, the report indicated, included relief, charity, development and reconstruction works and sponsoring of orphans.

The report said assistance extended in support for social organisations in Abu Dhabi alone stood at Dh44.85 million last year while humanitarian and relief projects undertaken by the RCA inside and outside the country and funded by H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Honorary Chairman of RCA, reached Dh71.6 million.

Deputy Prime Minister and RCA Chairman, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said ' The RCA is proud of its quick response to needs of regions affected by disasters and conflicts to offer all forms of support. 'This achievement should spur us to put in more effort to further improve efficiency of our performance in international humanitarian work," he added. 'The current challenging situation worldwide requires humanitarian and relief organisations to have strong presence in disaster and war hit regions to relieve victims, he said.

Khalifa Nasir Al Suwaidi, RCS Board Chairman, said that relief operations costing Dh74 million were executed recently in 35 countries, mainly in Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq and Palestine while expenditure on construction of new projects cost Dh47.7 million. These included 444 mosques in 16 countries at a total cost of Dh24.1 million and 13 mosques inside the UAE costing Dh4.7 million. Dh6.6 million was spent on drilling 1036 water wells in different countries.

Projects related to the Holy month of Ramadan stood at Dh15 million, he added.

He also said that the RCA would give more attention in its operations to the local front to cater for the increasing requirements generated by the recent economic developments especially impact of inflation and high living costs.

Sana Darwish Al Kitbi, Adviser to the RCA Chairman, said that humanitarian initiatives funded by H.H Sheikha Fatima amounted for expenditure of Dh71.6 million, of which Dh16.5 million was allocated for projects inside the UAE. Sheikha Fatima's projects, which covered health, educational and religious projects, were implemented in Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Morocco, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to her, Sheikha Fatima donated Dh2 million in support of fund for welfare of woman refugees.

'Sheikha Fatima's initiatives on the international humanitarian scene have made a big difference and a qualitative leap in the services extended in the flashpoints. Bu doing so, Sheikha Fatima has won hearts and minds of the underprivileged sectors and appreciation of the international community and UN,' she added.

During the first quarter of the current year, the RCA spent Dh3.6 million in Abu Dhabi in support of patients, students and defaulting prisoners. Humanitarian operations in Al Ain stood at Dh2.3 million in the same period. The value of programmes carried by the RCA during the first quarter of the year in Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman reached Dh 230,000, Dh2.3 million, Dh2.1 million and Dh555,160 respectively.
