Nairobi - In line with the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of UAE Red Crescent Society, a delegation arrived in Nairobi yesterday aboard two planes carrying 35 tonnes of relief supplies. The RCS team, headed by Dr Saleh Al Taei, will oversee distribution of relief materials, mainly foodstuff, to the people affected by drought in the border areas of Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, ships carrying 60 tonnes of relief materials dispatched by the RCS, arrived in the port city of Mombassa. "The relief materials will be shipped to the border areas for immediate distribution in the drought-hit areas. The team will also purchase materials from local markets to fill requirements for food and medical items," Al Taei said.

He revealed that the relief materials will be transported tomorrow to the Kenya-Somalia borders, 1,200 kilometres from Nairobi. Foodstuff materials include date, rice, potable water, flour, milk, sugar and canned food. The RCS also plans to kick off a nation-wide campaign to collect donations for people affected by drought.
