H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has said that education is the basis for building societies and without it no health system can be established in any society.

He added that due to Sharjah's keenness in building an educated society, it has come a long way in building an integrated, healthy and environment-friendly system.

The Ruler of Sharjah made the remarks yesterday while receiving a delegation from the regional office of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in his office in the presence of Sheikh Essam bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Advisor at the Ruler of Sharjah's office and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Sharjah's joining WHO Healthy Cities Programme.

During the meeting, Sheikh Sultan briefed the delegation about the emirate's efforts to improve environmental, health and educational levels, citing many projects initiated to protect the environment and spread health awareness. He noted that Sharjah had set up seeds bank, established natural sanctuaries to protect endangered species and launched tourism projects that serve the biodiversity of the emirate. It had also enacted laws to punish those who violate environmental regulations.

The Ruler of Sharjah thanked those in charge of the health system in the emirate, and commended WHO's role in promoting the health system worldwide.

The WHO delegation hailed the emirate for implementing the standards specified by the organisation to endorse the first city in the region to join the WHO Healthy Cities Programme. The delegation stressed that Sharjah would be a regional training centre for those seeking an endorsement to join the programme.

At the end of the programme, Sheikh Sultan posed for a photograph with the WHO delegation. – Emirates News Agency, WAM -
