All participating salukis sped to win the race laps which were organised as part of the 6th edition of the Al Dhafra Festival 2012.

The competition consisted of two laps, one for males and another for females. In the female lap, the superb saluki of owner Abdullah Hassan Al Quttami, Quimma, rose to the challenge and won the top position.

She was followed by Khamla of owner Seif Mohammad Al Kutbi in the second position and Khabla of owner Hamed Ali Al Dhaheri.

In the male lap, the fastest saluki, Lassaa, of owner Sultan Mohammad Sultan Markhan came in the first place, followed by Sarukh of owner Mohammad Salem Al Sabussi in the second position and Salek of owner Mansour Sherara Al Kutbi.

The Arab saluki race is one of the events of the Al Dhafra Festival that is held in Al Gharbia (the Western Region) in Abu Dhabi and organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority.

The race celebrates the Bedouin tradition of hunting with salukis. Independent but gentle, and aloof but affectionate, the saluki is a sight hound, which means it hunts by sight, runs the quarry down, catches it and kills or retrieves it. But to do so, the dog must be really fast, which explains the idea behind the organisation of the race.

Camel race

Who says camels are slow? You have to come to Al Gharbia and watch the Heritage Camel Race. The Desert Ship can run fast.

The race provides another opportunity to see camels in action outside the Mazayna Beauty Contest.

Camels are not only beautiful, they are also fast. Despite advances in technology and modernity, camels still reign over the vast deserts and enjoy the love and respect of the Emirati people and Bedouins in general.

The laps for participants from the Gulf Cooperation Council witnessed a high participation from the Omani nationals. Among the participants were also Qataris and Saudis.

In the first category of the laps for UAE nationals, Hamad Mohammad Khafan Al Mazrouei secured the first position and was followed by Khalfan Jumaa Obeid in second position and Nasser Mohammad Khalfan Al Mazrouei in the third position.

In the second category, Yahya Ali Saeed Al Malaouei came first, and was followed by Khamees Ali Saeed Al Malaouei in second position and Mesbah Mohammed Salem Al Khateri in third position.

In the third category, Mohammad Saeed Al Kutbi won the first position and was followed by Salem Hamad Shameel Al Rashidi in second position and Saeed Mubarak Al Abd Al Nuaimi in the third position.

Traditional market

Organised annually on the sidelines of the Al Dhafra Festival, the Traditional Market is a microcosm of the larger Arab Bedouin society.

The aim behind its creation is showcasing hundreds of years of desert life at one place.

The goods available at the traditional market include antiques, personal possessions, date varieties namely Shishi, Khalas, and Fard and two honey types, the local honey and the Egyptian honey.

Also on display are rare ancient currencies that were used in the country before the formation of the UAE, a sword with verses from the Holy Qu'ran inscribed on it and women's jewellery. – The Gulf Today
