French President Nicolas Sarkozy has sent a letter to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the UAE's National Day.

In his letter, Sarkozy expressed heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for the UAE's people and leadership on the occasion which he termed as an opportunity to re-asses the huge achievement made by the UAE thanks to the wise and enlightened stewardship of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan which the UAE's leadership is following.

He said the UAE's pioneering position in globalization and modernity is demonstrated by its commitment to environmental preservation, advanced technology and the promotion of culture and education.

France and the UAE, according to Sarkozy, are involved in an ideal strategic partnership that is continuously improving.

He expressed his "personal commitment to this partnership", noting that his visit to the UAE last May had given him the opportunity "to experience firsthand the strength our bilateral relations in all areas as well as "the common will to continuously further them." The French president said the rapprochement with the UAE had taken on new dimension with the renewal of the defense agreement and the opening on May 26, 2009 of "Peace Camp" in the Abu Dhabi as a French military base which is "a realization of France's full commitment to your (UAE's) peace and the region." Sarkozy expressed hopes for stronger cultural, educational and scientific research cooperation which is currently achieved through the Paris-Sorbonne University - Abu Dhabi and The Louvre Abu Dhabi museum.

Sarkozy also expressed France's backing for the UAE's "ambitious development policy", its efforts to acquire civilian nuclear energy as well as to Sheikh Khalifa's "outstanding leadership" of these efforts.

The French President said he is glad to have been, back in January 2008, the first to provide international support to UAE's endeavors, expressing hopes that the two countries would "share the French unique and recognized expertise in this field" and for putting "the French recognized skills in the fields of education, arts, culture and advanced research" at the service of the UAE.

"Thanks to your prudent leadership, your country (the UAE) continues to be a magnate of wisdom and stability", Sarkozy said.

"During our meetings, it was clear to me that we have convergent viewpoints on regional and international issues. I do hope for putting our strategic partnership at the service of peace which cannot be achieved in the Middle East, and other parts of the world, without justice", he continued.

He added that he would be glad to discuss these issues with Sheikh Khalifa "soon." – Emirates News Agency, WAM
