German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has lauded the UAE's rapid pace of development. "It is interesting to see the development of activities which is very unique here. The German government will back decisions of companies keen to make their presence felt in the UAE," he said, while addressing the press at the Media City.

On the training of Iraqi soldiers in the UAE, the Chancellor felt it would benefit the region more if they were trained here than in his country. Security in Iraq, he added, can be brought about only if the Iraqi forces are allowed to handle the situation. He felt that the United Nations should and will have to play a more important part in the reconstruction of Iraq. Germany, he added, was made humanitarian contributions to Iraq and provided resources to support the process.

On the issue of terrorism and money laundering, he said it was vital to fight these issues. He condemned the Israeli raids in Syria but pointed out that his country rejected terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens, especially children. "I have agreed with all partners during my visit that we support the roadmap for peace that was put together by the quartet. What they have drafted has to be implemented. All the expectations of the international community are described in the roadmap and it needs fresh impetus. The draft is a realistic part which will lead to reconciliation and we have to do everything to implement it," he said. The chancellor denied that a united Europe would be a threat to the US.
