Sea Dubai has stepped in as one of the sponsors for the 2009 UIM WPPA Class One Offshore World Powerboat Championship that gets under way with the opening round in Doha next month.

The sponsorship was announced yesterday by Saeed Hareb, CEO, Mina Seyahi Dubai in the presence of Marco Sala, General Secretary, International Offshore Teams Association (IOTA) and Sid Bensaleh, General Secretary, World Professional Powerboat Association (WPPA).

Sea Dubai is a brand identity promoted by Hareb with the intention of reaching the highest levels of competition in numerous watersports through regional and international strategies. Following its launch last year, the Sea Dubai-branded boat did a commendable job finishing among the top in the RC 44 Championships last season.

"The brand of Sea Dubai was created with the idea of reiterating Dubai as the home of watersports. Now we feel it is time we transport this brand to the rest of the world," Hareb stated, adding "I feel Class One racing is the right vehicle to transport our brand into an international market given its huge popularity and following," Hareb insisted.

As the Platinum Sponsor for the new season, Sea Dubai will ensure a new tracking system for all participating boats. This new addition will not only ensure better safety for the boats and the participants, but also give spectators the chance to view the competition via the internet.

"We are keen to keep on improving even during these tough times. We are always focused on making our sport more serious, more stable, more spectacular and attractive with clear, uniform rules to follow for all," stated Marco Sala.

Now in its third year, the WPPA has been at the forefront of ushering in the changes for watersports starting with Class One Offshore racing. Earlier this year, the WPPA floated a new class of racing called the X-Cat World Series, that has so far attracted a full field of around 30 boats after the two rounds held so far.

"And now with the sponsorship of Sea Dubai for the new season, the sport of Class One racing will rise to completely new heights," stated Sid Bensaleh.

The UIM WPPA Class One Offshore World Powerboat Championship already has EDOX, Nor-Tech and Marine Pool as major sponsors for the season.

"We need to keep on changing, keep on evolving so that our partners get a commercial value on their investment into the teams. We are here to run this sport in a professional manner and we want our sport to be known in a proper and positive way," Sala said. – Gulf News
