A UAE aid plane carrying 40 tonnes of food and medical supplies for Afghan refugees has arrived here. The plane is the second of the UAE Red Crescent Society airlift to relieve Afghan refugees. The airlift is in implementation of directives of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to rush urgent relief assistance to Afghan refugees.

The UAE assistance to Afghan refugees is followed up by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and RCS President. An RCS team arrived on the same plane to acquaint themselves with the conditions of the refugees and assess their needs so as to be met. A Team from the Iranian Red Crescent Society received the RCS officials at Mashhad airport. Abdullah Al Muheiri, RCS official, told reporters that a third aid plane will arrive here tomorrow and a fourth plane will arrive on Sunday.

The RCS team later met with Ali Mohammed Besharati, former Iranian Interior Minister and Mahd Ali Zada, governor of Mashhad and discussed the situation of the Afghan refugees. The two Iranian officials expressed thanks to the UAE government and people for supporting their Afghan brothers and asked the team to convey their sincere greetings to President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the UAE people. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
