Abdullah bin Zayed

Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan paid homage to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan whose effort in drawing up UAE foreign policy won him the devotion of his people and the admiration of the world.

In a statement published by the "Dir Al Watan" to mark 36th national day anniversary, Sheikh Abdullah also saluted President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, whose wise directives guaranteed continuous success to the country's foreign relations, based on the principles set by the founding fathers.

Sheikh Abdullah said that national day celebration provides an opportunity to study the unique experiment that managed to overcome difficulties and to prove sceptics wrong.

"Looking at the federation experiment, there are two things that catch one's eyes; the ability to blend form and function, and the will to make that unity a reality, not a mere dream." Sheikh Abdullah said that the founding fathers, including the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum were wise enough to realize that a gradual and consistent policy was needed to build a solid-base for a federation, capable of confronting all challenges.

"The founding fathers early realized that citizens represent the federation's backbone and that social and family bonds between the different emirates would facilitate building of a strong and cohesive nation." "Some saw the high level of autonomy granted to each emirate as a sign of weakness that could lead federation to cave in and a window for competition among citizens of one country. On the contrary, that autonomy added flexibility to the system and helped in distributing services equally between urban and rural areas." "The competition, perceived by some as a gap, turned out to be a source of power, as it helped in improving performance and in attracting local and foreign investments that transformed different areas of the country into world-class business hubs."
