Sharjah to set up Maritime City for shipbuilding
posted on 14/05/2006

Keen to attract heavy industries, Sharjah is developing an exclusive zone for shipbuilding and related maritime businesses. Last details of the Sharjah Maritime City plan are currently being worked out, according to Hamriyah Free Zone director-general Rashid Al Leem. The Maritime City will cover one million square metres and have facilities for drydocking, shipbuilding, ship design, warehousing and support services.

Sharjah is especially focusing on the maritime, steel and cement industries for strengthening its industrial base. As part of its second phase expansion, Hamriyah Free Zone's space has been doubled to 22 million square metres. "The government of Sharjah has allocated 11 million square metres of land for Hamriyah Free Zone's expansion. The second phase will accommodate mainly steel and cement industries because they require huge spaces," Al Leem said.

In the first phase, 90 per cent of Hamriyah's total land has already been leased. About 1,400 companies are currently operating within the zone. The new phase has five investors and three of these have acquired 3.2 million square metres. Saudi Arabian business group Al Ruya has signed a lease agreement for one million square metres of land to set up a cement factory with an initial investment of Dh1.5 billion. (Gulf News)
