HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed A Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, has said that after joining Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) his country has made great efforts in order to improve collective security.

"Since the UAE joined the ICI, we have made a great deal of efforts in order to improve collective security issues because we feel this is an exceptional framework for common initiatives in areas of defence to foster effort in regional and International level to combat terrorism and to take part in peace keeping and peace strengthening missions to arrive at solutions in area of conflict throughout the world. We need to work together", he said this while making a key note speech at an International Seminar on NATO-UAE relations and the way forward in the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative on Thursday at Emirates Palace.

He added," my nation has raised its flag in Somalia, Lebanon, Balkan, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere to help in reconstruction efforts. UAE will pursue close cooperation with partners within the frame work of ICI and we are keen to maintain the cooperation and stability in the region".

The UAE minister added that "we devote specific attention in strengthening this initiative; we want to face challenges in fighting common threats in order to promote peace and stability globally." He welcomed the visit of new Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen to the region.

The gulf region has a crucial role to play, not only because it is an important source of energy but also for geo-political and security reasons of major importance, which required International and regional cooperation, he told the meeting which was attended by Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO, H.E Abdurrahman bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States, and high-ranking officials from 28 countries affiliated to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

"The threats and challenges that we are facing together are complex and constant. The quality and verity of the challenges that we are facing is well known to all of us; war, famine and others, these threats are often more serious than the consequences of armed conflicts," he warned.

He remarked that the world has greatly changed because of the rapid development seen in the current century, and because it changes in communication and International relations, as well. We note that the traditional arm conflicts have changed and now today "we see that unconventional types of war and electronic warfare." "UAE policy led by HH president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, states that it is crucial to give more comprehensive view of the regional security, given the threats the Gulf region are facing and require attention on the regional and the international levels" he concluded. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
