Sheikh Abdullah holds talks with Brazilian counterpart

Brasilia - Visiting UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held talks Minister of External Relations of Brazil Celso Amorim over prospects of joint cooperation in areas of economy, trade and investment.

The two ministers also exchanged views on a host of regional and international issues of mutual concern. Arrangements for the upcoming visit of Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to Brazil next year were also discussed.

The two sides also examined the possibility of contribution of the private sector to advancing bilateral cooperation.

The UAE foreign minister stressed the vital importance of the rich sources and consumer market in Brazil, saying 'The UAE aspires to push joint economic cooperation ahead and stands ready to extend all possible assistance to Brazilian companies operating in sectors like industry, tourism, trade, renewable energy and real estate to encourage them invest in the UAE.

"The UAE open door policy will continue in order to lure more foreign investments to launch operations in the UAE which offers attractive incentives and ultra-modern infrastructure and services," Sheikh Abdullah said, inviting Brazilian modern technology, IT and knowledge firms to establish joint industrial ventures with UAE partners in a bid to transfer and localise technology.

For his part, the Brazilian minister invited the UAE to open a UAE consulate in Rio de Janeiro.

The Brazilian foreign minister accepted an invitation from his UAE counterpart to attend as an observer the preparatory conference of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) which will be held in Abu Dhabi next January.

Brazilian minister of mines and energy shed light during the meeting on the energy sectors in Brazil, saying renewable energy accounts for 41% of total generated energy and called on UAE companies to invest in organic energy from sugar cane.

The Brazilian foreign minister stressed his country's desire to develop strong diplomatic and economic relations with the UAE.

The UAE side called for concluding bilateral agreements on avoidance of double taxation and encouragement and protection of investment.

Later, Sheikh Abdulla met with Sergio Cabral, Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro who briefed him on under-construction projects in his state and expressed his willing to expand scope of joint cooperation and benefit from the UAE development model. He invited UAE investors to tap rich resources in his state.

Sheikh Abdullah urged the two countries to broaden the scope of joint cooperation in education, health, technology, civil aviation, culture, tourism and renewable energy.

Brazil is the major trade partner of the UAE in Latin America with trade exchange reaching US$300 million.

Meanwhile, the UAE foreign minister inspected progress of construction works on two towers being undertaken by Abu Dhabi Investment Authority in Rio de Janeiro. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
