Sheikh Abdullah launches second phase of Lebanese demining programme

Beirut - Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Information and Culture, today launched the second phase of the UAE-Lebanese Solidarity Project on clearing mines from South Lebanon. Sheikh Abdullah started his work schedule with a meeting with relevant parties including the Representative of the UN Secretary General, Lebanese Defence Minister, UAE and Lebanese Military Officers, the UAE Ambassador to Lebanon a number of Arab and Foreign Ambassadors. Hundreds of citizens also gathered in the Tabnin village to greet Sheikh Abdullah and to express their appreciation of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his historic initiative in sponsoring the demining of South Lebanon.



Sheikh Abdullah thanked the crowd and affirmed the UAE's continued support for the victorious Lebanese people. "What the UAE is doing in line with the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Zayed is a national duty towards our Lebanese brothers who sacrificed and resisted occupation until they liberated their country," Sheikh Abdullah said. Sheikh Abdullah later visited Beit Yahoun, considered to be one the most dangerous mine fields, where some UAE Armed Forces Units are engaged in clearing mines. Lebanese Defence Minister Khalil Hirawi and other officials hailed the UAE's initiative in financing the demining project. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
