Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, yesterday attended the inauguration of the new American Embassy at the diplomatic area in Abu Dhabi. Also attending the ceremony was a number of Sheikhs, Ministers, senior officials and heads of Arab and foreign diplomatic corps in the country. Marcel Wahba, U.S. Ambassador to the UAE, said the design of the building known as the "DUNES" was inspired by the rolling, sloping sand dunes of the Emirates desert.

In a welcoming statement, she said that magnificent building reflected the strong relations between the American and UAE peoples, noting that the USA-UAE partnership under the wise leadership of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has reached new heights. She said that the framework of trade and investment between the two countries would be signed later in the month and that a new regional office for the co-ordination of the U.S. President's Middle East Partnership Initiative would be soon opened at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

"We are proud that a number of UAE youth have lived and studied in the United States and we hope that future generations will continue to study in the States," she said, pointing out that the Embassy was also in the process of attracting more American students to study in the UAE to enable them acquaint themselves with UAE culture and friendship between the two countries.

Wahba asserted the UAE was one of the closest and most important friends of the U.S. in the region and that the Embassy edifice was a living symbol of such the partnership and friendship of the two countries. Sheikh Hamdan later cut the traditional ribbon and made a tour of the various parts of the sprawling complex. The building accommodates 112 paintings by 47 Americans of Arab and Iranian origin as well as a painting by the UAE artist Abdul Qadir Al Rees. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
