Ban Ki-Moon, South Korean Foreign Minister said in Seoul yesterday that the current visit to Korea by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs would bolster bilateral relations between the two countries. "Bilateral relations between the UAE and South Korea have developed significantly over the last few years. But we hope that the current visit by Sheikh Hamdan will further bolster our cooperation, particularly in the political, economic and cultural spheres” said the Foreign Minister in statement to WAM.

He stressed the need for exchange of visits between UAE and Korean officials, saying that such high-level visits will elevate bilateral cooperation to new highs. The minister noted that there were already good signs that the two countries were heading towards closer ties with the volume of trade exchange having reached US$ 7.9 billion. Korean airlines recently started flights to Dubai at the rate of three rates flights weekly and this is set to add a new dimension to bilateral ties, said the minister.

Ban Ki-Moon pointed out that Korean companies which are now eying post war- Iraqi market are planning to move to the UAE as their regional base, given its sound infrastructure and business reputation. On other issues of mutual interest , Ki Moon said the visit of Sheikh Hamdan was an opportunity to discuss a whole range of other issues. "Since Sheikh Hamdan is the highest-level UAE official to visit Korea, it is an opportunity to discuss with him issues such as the Middle East and the North Korean nuclear standoff.

We know that Sheikh Hamdan is an influential figure in the Arab world and we look forward to sharing these issues with him. His visit also comes at a time when Korea is preparing to send troops to Iraq and we hope that Sheikh Hamdan will be able to help us explain to the Arab world that our mission in Iraq will be purely humanitarian” he said.
