Sheikh Khalifa's sixth accession anniversary to the UAE Presidency marked

The third of November corresponds with the sixth anniversary accession of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to the UAE Presidency in 2004, following the death of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE Federation.

The Federal Supreme Council unanimously elected Sheikh Khalifa as the UAE President in a meeting held on the third of November in 2004, at Al Bateen Palace in Abu Dhabi. Following his election, Sheikh Khalifa pledged that he would pursue the legacy and course set by the late Sheikh Zayed.

On Nov. 3, 2009, Their Highnesses, Members of Supreme Federal Council renewed their confidence in Sheikh Khalifa for the second five year term in office.

Sheikh Khalifa is keen to communicate with the UAE citizens in public and private occasions. He has been providing to them services, importantly, in housing through "the Sheikh Khalifa Housing Project". He has contributed in easing suffering of citizens as he continued urban development programmes, covering all the areas across the UAE. Given the developmental accomplishments, the popularity of Sheikh Khalifa grew among the citizens.

He contributed in construction of Mosques, Islamic centres, schools and hospitals that bear his name in many countries. The relief aid has been provided to the victims of catastrophes worldwide.

During December 2006, the UAE witnessed the democratic elections in which half of the membership was elected to the Federal National Council with significant participation of Emirati woman.

Sheikh Khalifa has tackled the repercussions of the World Financial Crisis by injecting liquidity in the banking and financial institutions in the UAE. He has been striving to make the UAE an international financial, cultural, artistic and educational hub. The UAE has signed a number of agreements in the peaceful nuclear energy programme in full framework of transparency.

The labour city of world class has been constructed in the UAE.

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development has been offering billions of dollars as loans and grants to the Arab and developing countries.

Many world leaders hailed wisdom of Sheikh Khalifa, while the local, regional and international media have lauded the role of Sheikh Khalifa in supporting the UAE Union. He preserves the UAE's heritage and culture standing, as well as religious tolerance among 200 nationalities who reside in the UAE.

The US Newsweek Magazine selected the UAE President as one of the most 50 influential people in the world.

Sheikh Khalifa occupied the post of the Ruler's Representative in Eastern Region and head of its courts on Sept. 18, 1966. He became Abu Dhabi Crown Prince on Feb. 01, 1969. Hence he became so close to the citizens, acquiring the experiences from the late Sheikh Zayed. Sheikh Khalifa became on the second of February in 1969, head of the Department of Defence in Abu Dhabi. On the first of July 1971, he became the Prime Minister of Abu Dhabi Cabinet. On Feb. 20, 1974, he became Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

Sheikh Khalifa was appointed as the Supreme Deputy Commander of the UAE Armed Forces in 1976, following the historic decision taken by the Supreme Federal Council to merge the Armed Forces under one command and flag. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
