Washington D.C. - His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, yesterday met with HE President Lee Myung-Bak of South Korea and HE President Sebastian Pinera of Chile.

The one-to-one meetings were held on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in the US capital. The summit, hosted by the US President Barack Obama, was officially opened yesterday.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed discussed with the two leaders international efforts to combat nuclear terrorism and the need for nations to abide by international treaties with regard to nuclear non-proliferation.

His Highness the Crown Prince also discussed regional and international developments, including the Middle East peace process.

In his meeting with HE President Lee, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed commended the strong relationship between the UAE and Korea, saying that it has witnessed major developments in the past few months.

A consortium of South Korean companies was awarded in December 2009 a contract worth US$20 billion to build four peaceful nuclear power plants in the UAE. The contract was signed during a visit by HE President Lee Myung-Bak to Abu Dhabi.

The consortium, led by Korea Electric Power Corp (Kepco), also includes Samsung, Hyundai and Doosan Heavy Industries from Korea and the US firm Westinghouse as well as Japan's Toshiba.

The UAE's plans to establish a peaceful nuclear energy programme were motivated by its need to develop additional sources of electricity to meet future demands and ensure a sustained and rapid economic development.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed was at the head of the UAE delegation to the Nuclear Security Summit, which was attended by 47 world leaders. His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Foreign Minister of the UAE, also attended the meetings.

In the meeting with HE President Sebastian Pinera, the two leaders discussed bilateral economic and diplomatic relations between the two friendly nations. Trade between Chile and the UAE reached US$113 million in 2008. A major exporter of fresh fruits, wood and race horses to the UAE, Chile has submitted a proposal for free trade with the GCC to expand its presence in the region. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
