Khost, Afghanistan - Some 3000 Afghan students will be offered seats in the Sheikh Zayed University which opened here today. The University was built on a generous grant by the late UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
This world-class institution of higher learning was inaugurated today by Hamdan Mussalam Al Mazroui, Chairman of the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Awqaf. The inauguration was executed on the orders of the incumbent UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
In remarks after the inauguration ceremony, Al Mazroui reiterated the UAE's commitment to help the Afghan people in the field of health, education, reconstruction, and humanitarian world. He said the opening of the university underscored the commitment of Sheikh Khalifa to fulfil the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed.
Located at Khost province, 200km away from the capital Kabul, the Zayed University was built at the cost of US$4.8 million. The university will offer courses in medicine, engineering, agriculture, technology, Islamic studies, arts, literature and education. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the UAE delegation in addition to deans and lecturers of the university and Afghan officials. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
