Sheikh Zayed a real supporter of women issues-Sheikha Fatima says

Abu Dhabi, Feb.1, 2002 (WAM)--Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the President's wife and Chairwoman of the UAE General Women's Union, GWU, has said that President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, had always supported women and that women issues had always been of his prime interest and care. In an exclusive interview with "Al Khaleej” newspaper and "Kul Al Usra” (the whole family) magazine, Sheikha Fatima pointed out that Sheikh Zayed and their Highnesses the Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates had always defended the equality of men and women in terms of rights and obligations. She said that UAE women had in deed invaded the political work thanks to the wise decision of H.H. the Sharjah Ruler that permitted five UAE women to become members of the Sharjah Consultative Council. Sheikha Fatima also praised the major role played by the national media in enhancing and supporting women work in the country, which re-iterates women's legal and constitutional rights. On Arab Women Media Forum, which will begin here tomorrow, Sheikha Fatima said that she was happy to see UAE women playing a major role in the media sector and urged media institutions to provide more opportunities for UAE women journalists. Sheikha Fatima said that the selection of Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the wife of the Sharjah Ruler and chairwoman of the family supreme council, to be honoured was due to her historical role in social work in the country. Sheikha Fatima praised Sheikha Jawaher for her strong support for the Sharjah Ruler's decision to allow women participation in the Sharjah Consultative Council, which allowed UAE women to officially enter the political sphere. She also called on all Arab women institutions to support the Palestinian women and their activities to enable them to play their role, praising in this regard the active contribution of Palestinian women in fighting the Zionist Israeli occupation.



On the UAE women joining the Federal National Council, FNC, Sheikha Fatima said :” UAE women are on the verge of realising this dream which I personally do not consider as a dream but one of their constitutional rights.” Sheikha Fatima described the forum as an opportunity to study the relation between women and the media and the vision of Arab media towards women, pointing out that the support of media institutions to Arab women experiences was very effective in enhancing the value of total contribution of women in their countries' construction and development. In her reply to her evaluation of the achievements of the UAE Red Crescent Society under the chairmanship of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikha Fatima, being the honorary chairwoman of the society, said that she was very pleased and satisfied about the accomplishments of the society which assistance had covered all parts of the world thanks to the directives of President Sheikh Zayed. She added that the follow up of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, helped the society to become of the leading humanitarian societies in the world, pointing out to the pioneer role played by RCS in Kosovo, Bosnia, Palestine and Afghanistan.(The Emirates News AGency, WAM)
