President H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan yesterday issued an Emiri Decree on the appointment of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Deputy Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and authorises him to assume the position of Crown Prince once the position falls vacant. It states that H.H. Sheikh Zayed has issued the decree after reviewing Law No.1 of 1974 regarding the re-organisation of the Government bodies of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and its amendments and after perusal of Emiri decree No. 15 of 1976 regarding the formation of the Crown Prince's Court and the Chairman of the Executive Council and its amendments.

Article one of the decree appoints Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Deputy Crown Prince and authorises him to assume the position of Crown Prince once the position becomes vacant. Article two of the decree revokes all provisions that are contrary to the new decree. The decree will be effective from the date of its issuance and will be published in the official gazette.

Born in 1961, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who was appointed today as Deputy Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has been the UAE Armed Forces Chief of Staff since January 1993 and was promoted to the rank of Lt. He took a number of specialised military courses in various fields and had held several military ranks including Commander of Air Forces and Air Defence and Deputy Chief of Staff before he was appointed as the Chief of Staff.

Besides his military duties, Sheikh Mohammed is also the President's Chief Advisor on national security issues. He also participates in all political and legislative discussions and is an active member of the Supreme Petroleum Council, the highest petroleum and energy authority in the Emirate.
