Sheikh Zayed's remarks lauded

Former US Assistant Secretary of state Richard Murphy in a report prepared for the political dossier of the Zayed Centre for Co-ordination and Follow-up lauded the statements made by President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan about the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on Sept.11 as well as his statements on the peace process, said a Zayed Centre press release. Murphy stated that the message of Sheikh Zayed to the NATO leaders, in which he called for prompt action against terrorism and for the formation of a strong international coalition, revealed his concern for international issues and his prudent insight in dealing with such issues. He stressed that Sheikh Zayed's advice to US President George W. Bush, that he should be patient and verify the evidence against the culprits in the barbaric attacks of Sept.11, was well understood. Murphy also referred to Bush's speech to the Senate on Sept.20, in which he said the US was on a long anti-terrorist campaign, but they would first begin by identifying those responsible for such terrorist acts and then deal with them in a strict manner.

Referring to Sheikh Zayed's advice on the Middle East peace process, Murphy stated that he was glad to see the efforts made by the Bush administration in the last few weeks with the aim of reviving the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. "This conflict that has continued for long without any hope of reaching a fair resolution has crippled all the people involved in it." "This has poisoned attitudes towards the US. The Bush administration is aware of these two facts and is trying now to push the two parties to go back to the negotiating table and keep away from violence. All parties may accept a fair resolution," added Murphy. (The Gulf Today)
