Exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone, as it helps them stay fit and happy, and healthy individuals work better and contribute more effectively to society, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, said on Wednesday.

"That is why sports is one of the key sectors supported by the UAE leadership," he said, while praising the launch of the ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed Initiative for Community Sports' by the Dubai Sports Council in collaboration with ten local government entities and departments in Dubai to promote sports and physical activity that enhances happiness and positivity.

The initiative is a quality addition to community sports in Dubai and is supported by various government entities, Sheikh Hamdan noted. These entities are together working to achieve the national objective of building a healthy, happy and productive society by raising awareness of the impact of physical activity on health and well-being.

Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, President of the National Olympic Committee and President of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Awards, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed Initiative for Community Sports' yesterday and unveiled its logo.

H.H. Sheikh Ahmed also witnessed the signing of the launch agreement by the Directors of the participating departments and government entities, which included the Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Police, Dubai Municipality, Road and Transport Authority, Health Authority, Knowledge Authority, Civil Defence, Community Development Authority, Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs and Dubai Media Incorporated.

He also visited the premises of the initiative, the headquarters of the Dubai Sports Council, and the ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed Initiative for Community Sports Club', which was launched in co-operation with ADIDAS.

The ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed Initiative for Community Sports' has six main components that include a strategic partnership between departments and entities, and community sports events in Dubai featuring over 80 events such as jogging, swimming and biking in various areas of Dubai.

The initiative also includes the Fitness Bus and the Dubai Fitness Index, which will be launched in 2018.

A key objective of the initiative is to encourage people to engage in some sports discipline, and adopt it as a lifestyle. It also aims to raise Dubai's profile as a modern city where a high percentage of residents play some form of sports, and to fight unhealthy habits such as smoking and chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

The initiative will have ambassadors representing various sectors of society. - (Emirates News Agency, WAM) -http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395301106685.html
