Sri Lanka lauds UAE relief aid to tsunami victims

Sri Lankan Environment and Natural Resources Minister Abdul Hamid Fuwzi praised yesterday UAE's humanitarian efforts in assisting the tsunami-victims in his country. He said the UAE was among the first donors to launch relief operations in Sri Lanka.

The minister made his remarks during a visit to the Red Crescent Society (RCS) where he welcomed by RCS Chairman Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi. The minister convey to Al Suweidi appreciation of his government to the RCS for its humanitarian initiative there. 'The RCS relief operations have left a good impression in Sri Lanka, 'he added.

He briefed Al Suweidi on his country's effort for reconstruction of infrastructure facilities destroyed by the tidal waves. Al Suweidi said the RCS was undertaking humanitarian and development projects in Sri Lank worth Dh 4.6 million. 'The projects include the construction of Sheikh Khalifa housing city, a hospital, an orphanage, a mosque and a school,' he added. According to him, the RCS has offered assistance in the tune of Dh 11.3 million since 2000. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
