Sri Lankan envoy praises UAE for tsunami aid

Sri Lankan Ambassador Mohamed Nabavi Junaid yesterday tributes to the UAE for its humanitarian and charitable initiatives towards his people during the tsunami crisis. 'The UAE was among the first aid providers to the tsunami victims in Asian countries, the envoy said during a visit to the premises of the UAE Red Crescent Society where he was welcomed by its Chairman Khalifa Nasser Al Suwaidi.



'The RCS' assistance to the victims of the tidal waves has left a good impression,' he added. During the visit, the envoy and RCS officials discussed the ongoing preparations for commencing construction of the Sheikh Khalifa City which will be carried out by the RCS in cooperation with the UNDP. He said that his country was ready to extend all possible help to build the vital project. The Dh 15.4 million City will compose of 400 housing units in addition to a mosque, school and health centre.



Another projects being executed by the RCS there were also reviewed. Since 2000, the RCS offered relief assistance worth Dh11.3 million to Sri Lanka including over Dh 5 million for tsunami victims. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
