Statement by General H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces to the Nation Shield magazine on the 38th anniversary of the national day.

As we celebrate the 38th anniversary of our national day, our country is striding confidently to achieving the empowerment phase, launched by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in continuation of the foundation a phase, laid by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and led to a major transformation in the life of the UAE people and in the history of the entire region.

The federation state founded by the late Sheikh Zayed has drawn horizons for the future and energized the citizens to turn hopes into reality and to work for a brighter future for our country.

Today, the UAE, under the wise leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Their Highnesses the Supreme Council Members '&' Rulers of the Emirates." The vision for the future has taken into consideration contemporary concepts of comprehensive and sustainable development, as well as the belief that the UAE citizens are central to any development process.

The leadership's vision has paved way for the youth to play an important role in implementing comprehensive development strategies. The true success of these strategies is measured by the ability to build capacities and to inspire citizens of the country to perform in an environment that respects human beings and free of any risks or threats.

During the development of national strategies, it was clear that education was lagging behind and below our ambitions. We have agreed that preparing citizens for the future would not be possible without reforms to educational systems.

We are determined to improve the standards of our universities as centres for illumination. We have already taken steps towards that by signing cooperation agreements with the world's most renowned universities.

We also value the endeavours of our universities to strengthen and upgrade standards of education of technology. We also salute their keen efforts to prepare young generations, armed with knowledge, competitive and capable of meeting requirements of the job market.

The UAE woman has made a great breakthrough. Today, UAE women assume high positions in all fields, including military and security, and contribute significantly in the development process. The UAE women are now part of the executive, legislative and judicial estates.

The UAE has become a model for the welfare of the family and care for children and aged people. We appreciate the efforts being made by the Family Development Foundation and other organisations to guarantee familial stability and to strengthen bonds between different family members.

The strategic vision also attached great importance to cooperation between federal and local entities in order to modernise decision making mechanism, to improve efficiency of government, to strengthen legislative and legal regulations and to develop human resources.

Another priority for the government is the industry which has become a major element in our efforts to diversify our economy. The achievements made in restructuring the government sector, governance of public companies and enhancing private sector's role in the comprehensive development, herald a new era for Public-Private Partnership.

We also seek to diversify our economic resources in the fields of renewable energy through Masdar City. The country has also made a giant step by winning the bid to host headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The UAE continues to adopt the policy of expanding production base despite the fallouts of the global financial crisis. The country was able to absorb the impact of that crisis thanks to quick action by the government that led to economic recovery and enhancing the country's competitiveness.

The leadership's directives to provide more support to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises for nationals helped in creating more job opportunities to the UAE nationals. As part of our endeavour to secure a bright future for our younger generations, we have stepped up our investments in the funds abroad, not for political reasons and without jeopardising our national principles. The step is seen as a long term investment as we believe that our investments are part of our commitment to the next generations who might not have the current resources such as oil.

Deepening sense of patriotism and love for the country among the citizens has also been one of the priorities for the federation. Keen to instill the concept of national identity, we have worked toward perpetuating the national dialogue and to promote a democratic climate that allows different points of views and discussion of public issues in a transparent and objective manner.

The UAE was among the first countries to ratify human rights conventions and to enact laws in that regard. The country moved to build modern cities for workers, establishing special courts for labour disputes and applying stern penalties for crimes of human trafficking. The country strongly supports international efforts to combat organised crime and money laundering.

The UAE succeeded in hosting a number of international sport events. It has also implemented a system for professional sports and honoured national athletes who defend colours of the UAE.

The security, prosperity and progress we enjoy are a natural outcome for a progressive outlook that seeks to harness knowledge and technology and to provide means of decent living for the citizens and residents alike. We did not stop there, but reached out to our brotherly and friendly countries through development projects, financial grants and easy loans, as well as humanitarian support and charity in the countries hit by natural calamities and conflicts.

We extend our congratulations to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and to Their Highnesses the Rulers of Emirates and to our citizens. We renew our pledge to continue working under the wise leadership of President his Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to achieve national goals and to maintain the bright image of the UAE in international arenas. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
