Strategy open for further development: Abdullah bin Zayed

The Federal Government strategy announced yesterday is open for development and is no way a "rigid text", said UAE Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed.

In a press conference held in Abu Dhabi yesterday, Sheikh Abdullah said the performance of all ministries will be monitored to ensure their compliance with the strategic objectives. Sheik Abdullah said while the strategy addressed domestic issues, progress on regional peace and stability will help attain the strategic objectives.

He said the UAE's efforts to solving regional crises are driven by its keenness to pave the way for accelerated development. "Solving regional crises will certainly enhance our development," he said.

Commenting on the link between development and democratization, Sheikh Abdullah said the UAE had made significant steps toward g political participation. "This process will continue. It is a matter of time. Election of half the Federal National Council was one step and more steps will follow," he said.

Commenting on the role of the judiciary under the strategy, Sheikh Abdullah said: "Maintaining justice is one of the pillars of the strategy. We would ultimately want to see a judicial system fully independent from the executive body. But that will be possible only when the judiciary has been satisfactorily developed." Sheikh Abdullah maintained that redressing the demographic imbalance would be pursued through training and development of the indigenous manpower. "The Government's target is to bring unemployment among Nationals all the way down to zero through training and development, and a proactive role of the private sector," he said.

Asked if the drive for overseas investment would continue despite the Dubai World Experience, Sheikh Abdullah said the UAE would continue to probe investment opportunities around the world. "We have learnt from that experience. Our move to acquire US ports should have been preceded by contacts with the non-governmental sector in the US to explain the purpose behind the move and its implications on the UAE-US relations. The move was also ill timed, having been initiated ahead of the US congressional elections," he said.

Nevertheless, it was a very informative experience for us," Sheikh Abdullah said. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
