The ZCCF presents "The UAE-Spain Relations” as a sequel to its publications that focus light on the bilateral relations of the UAE with other countries of the world. This publication touches on the history, development and various aspects of the UAE relations with Spain. The study surveys the development of relations with Spain before the establishment of the UAE, followed by the opening of the Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi 1977 and the historic visit of the Spanish monarch Juan Carlos to the UAE in 1981.

The visit played a significant role in forging the bilateral relations, which were further cemented by the visit of Philip De Borbon, Crown Prince of Spain in 1991, according to a press release from ZCCF. The study sheds light on important aspects of the UAE-Spain relations, especially the economic relations that witnessed a remarkable surge during the last three decades beginning with the exchange of trade delegations.

The visit of the delegation of the Economic Department of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Madrid in 1978 was one of the most significant among such delegations as it paved the way for the exchange of other trade and economic delegations between the two countries. The balance of payments kept rising and falling till the nineties when there was a remarkable increase in trade exchanges between the two countries. It rose by 21% in 1994 and 1995 and jumped to 43% in 1996 and continued increasing till 1998.

The year 2000 witnessed visits of several Spanish delegations to Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. In view of the growing increase in trade and economic relations between the UAE and Spain, a permanent regional office and exhibition of Spanish products was opened in the UAE in September 2000.

In 1982, UAE capital flowed into Spain for investment in agriculture, industry and cattle farming. Later, in 1986 shares of some big Spanish oil companies were bought and then investments diversified to other sectors like tourism, hotels and space communication.

The study also underlines the stances of Spain towards the Arab causes, its support of the Palestinian issue in international forums since 1974 and its recognition of PLO and allowing it to open its office in Madrid in 1977. The UAE-Spanish co-operation in the field of education and culture witnessed striking growth when HH Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah opened a cultural complex in Granada, Spain, in 2001.
