Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail, Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs said yesterday that his country looks forward to a UAE role after the conclusion of a comprehensive peace in Sudan. Speaking at a press conference at the Abu Dhabi Intercontinental Ismail said that his visit to the UAE, the first by a Sudanese official since a wealth-sharing deal was signed last week, is aimed at briefing the UAE officials about the wealth-sharing agreement signed between the Sudan government and the opposition Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA).

"As you all know, the UAE under the Leadership of President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has been keen to see the Sudanese conflict resolved" Ismail added that peace will pave the way for many investment, commercial, developmental and humanitarian projects, of which Sudan expects the UAE to be a major player. He noted that European countries will hold a donors meeting in Oslo in March this year to raise funds for the reconstruction and resettlement of refugees in the war affected areas.

On his discussions with Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ismail said the UAE and Sudan agreed to set up a higher ministerial committee which will be the official framework for cooperation between the two countries He said he had conveyed the greetings of President Omar Al Bashir to H.H Sheikh Zayed. Ismail has said that peace talks currently underway in the Kenyan lake resort of Naivasha would certainly culminate in a comprehensive settlement to the 20-year old conflict between the Central Government and the (SPLA).

"The peace process is irreversible. With the signing last week of a wealth-sharing deal between the South and the North, we are close to ending the conflict in our country. The guns have fallen silent once and for all and we are now looking forward to the post-war challenges", he said. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
