Sultan of Brunei praises "warm and friendly" ties with UAE

His Majesty Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam to yesterday praised the progress of relations between the United Arab Emirates and his country.

In a statement made to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) upon his arrival here on a state visit, the Sultan of Brunei described relations between the two countries as "warm and friendly." Brunei Darussalam and the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations on 28 May 1992, Brunei Darussalam opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi in 1994 and has had resident Ambassador since 2001, while the UAE accredited its Ambassador in Jakarta since July 1999.

In an effort to promote tourism and people to people contacts, the two countries implemented in 2001 a 30-day visa waiver arrangement to encourage exchange of visits by their respective citizens. The two countries also signed in 1994 an air services agreement that allows national carriers to operate services between the two capitals and beyond. Currently Royal Brunei Airlines flies 7 times a week to Dubai.

The state Visit will give opportunity for the two countries to develop further their personal friendship and brotherly relations. During the visit, regional and international issues of mutual interest as well as ways and means of developing and facilitating cooperation in trade, investment, finance, information, technology and tourism.

Officials of the two countries will also explore opportunities for the two countries to undertake joint investment projects and to start discussions on the avoidance of double taxation agreement and agreement on the promotion and protection of investments.

There are many opportunities for the UAE to invest in Brunei Darussalam, such as in Islamic banking, property development, hall food industry and tourism related service. Brunei Darussalam will also explore the investment opportunities in the UAE, particularly in refineries, petrochemical industry, property and financial services. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
