The UAE development model under the prudent stewardship of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was the focus of a symposium organised on Monday by the Centre for Information Affairs of Deputy Prime Minister on UAE National Day. A number of politicians, thinkers, and representatives of international organizations and institutions participated in the event which was held to mark the 36th anniversary of UAE National Day.

The Centre for Information Affairs presented working paper entitled, "The Leader Khalifa Bin Zayed: Sensible Vision and Distinct International Status,” in which it stated that the development model in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), under the wise leadership of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, presents a shining example of the great achievement and immense efforts aimed at spreading prosperity across the nation so that development touches every aspect of human development and civilisational progress.

'The country adopts firm stands and effective actions that enhance its international standing, based on the desire to strengthen the principles of equity and justice and extend the bridges of communication and cooperation, with a view to achieving world peace and security and spreading love and peace among peoples and nations, the paper added.

On his part, Dr. Khaled Alloush, UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative to UAE, talked about the Millennium Development Goals, mentioning in particular the role of four institutions in UAE. The first is the Zayed Foundation for Charitable and Humanitarian Works whose activities include education, health, water, relief, and other humanitarian operations in the UAE and abroad. He said that 'More than 30 countries have benefited from this foundation from 1993 to 2006.

The other is the Mohammed bin Rashid Charitable Foundation. He said that among the activities of this institution had been the launch of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, of an endowment of USUS$ 10 billion, which aims to promote education and knowledge. He also mentioned Dubai Care initiative to provide education for one million children in the poor countries.

The UAE Red Crescent, whose contributions cover many fields in human development in UAE and in many countries in the world, plays big role in human development, said Dr. Khaled Alloush, indicating that it covers areas of education, health, relief works, housing, children and families. He pointed out that the institution contributed US$220 million Dollars in 2006 to many countries around the world.

The other institution, he said, is the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, which provides aid and assistance to about 50 Arab, African, and Asian countries. He stated that the total contribution of this institution from 1971 to 2003 has reached about 20 billion UAE Dirhams.

H.E. Professor Kang Sun-Yong, former South Korean Ambassador to the UAE, said that the UAE enjoys progress and prosperity under the wise leadership of Sheikh Khalifa.

He pointed out that he is now preparing a book on the personality, achievements, and deeds of the founding father of the UAE country, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He described Sheikh Zayed as a legendary leader and one of the great statesmen who succeeded in founding a renaissance that took the country to the ranks of the advanced nations, through positive interaction between the sense of belonging to the country's heritage and civilization on the one hand, and the openness toward modernity on the other hand, which made the UAE a focus of the world attention in terms of its economic and urban development.

He said that the book touches upon the life of late Sheikh Zayed and his role in building a new civilization in the region. He added that the book describes the environment in which Sheikh Zayed grew up, his philosophy in government, and his special interest in culture and heritage. He said that Sheikh Zayed used oil for providing decent life for his people. The book also displays the march of the UAE Union and its role at the international arena, he said.

George Deeb, Advisor to President of Lebanon for International Affairs, stated that he is astonished, but never surprised, by the accelerating progress and development experienced by the UAE. 'Under the leadership of Sheikh Khalifa, the independence has been deepened and the nation is revelling in its glory and splendour, he pointed out. He indicated that the UAE National Day is rich of its achievements and of the renaissance that took the country to a high standing among the other nations.

He praised the UAE's support to Lebanon when the latter faced in the summer of 2006 an Israeli aggression targeting the entire country, land and people. The UAE then, government and people, stood by Lebanon, providing it with all sorts of support and aid, he said, adding that, ?We all remember how H.H. Sheikh Khalifa called on the international community to act urgently to stop the aggression on Lebanon. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
