Syria's state TV aired on Sunday evening a special report on the UAE-Syrian relations. The lengthy report, which coincides with the current visit to the Syrian Arab Republic by President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, praised the historical ties linking the two countries, and maintained that bilateral cooperation was poised for further consolidation in the foreseeable future.

The report included an elaborate account of the UAE achievements, highlighting the country's success in building a durable federation experience and placing the country, in a short span of time, among the world's most civilised nations.

The report attributed the success of the UAE nation-building experience to "its wise and balanced policies which are based on credibility, dialogue, mutual respect, non-interference in others' affairs, support of just causes, and proactive contribution to world security and peace".

On trade relations, the report noted that the UAE was Syria's major Arab trade partner. "Last year marked a milestone in bilateral relations," said the report. "Memoranda of understanding were signed for enhancing cooperation in customs, telecommunications, e-learning, marine transport, intra-city transport, and other cultural, media, educational, social and labour issues."

According to the report, trade exchange has grown from 5.936 Syrian Liras in 2001 to 12.894 billion in 2006. "The surge in the volume of trade exchange was triggered by the free trade zone agreement concluded last year, said the report. Drawing an optimistic picture for the future of the UAE-Syrian relations, the report said bilateral relations were poised for significant development particularly in the area of joint investment. "Major UAE companies are investing billions of dollars in development and real estate projects in Syria, and many UAE banks have established branch offices in Syria," the report said.
