Tajikistan wants to enhance its relations with the UAE on the basis of common interest and mutual respect, Dr Talbak Nazarov, Tajikistan's Foreign Minister, said yesterday in a lecture he gave at the Zayed Centre for Co-operation and Follow-Up. He said that relations between his country and the UAE started in 1992 after Tajikistan gained independence and were strengthened by the visit of president Imam Ali Rahmanov to the UAE in 1995.

Several important agreements and investment protection agreements were made during the visit and as a result a Tajik Commercial Attaché Office was also opened in Dubai and a weekly Sharjah-flight started. Dr Nazarov gave a brief explanation of the civil war that broke out in the South of his country in 1992 lasting for five years. He said Afghan war had an impact on the Tajik civil war. "We solved the conflict and this should serve as a good example for countries facing similar problems." (The Khaleej Times)
